Being stuck in an office all day can be a drag, but if you make your office a fun and exciting atmosphere it will be more enjoyable and maybe even make your job feel a little less like work. There are a few things you can do to make your office have a more enjoyable atmosphere, such as positioning the furniture in a inviting way, adding color, personal touches, or even finding creative solutions to essential supplies.
Positioning Furniture
One of the most important things you can do to improve your office ambiance is to re-position the furniture. Your desk regardless if its in an office or at home should always face the door, your back should never be to the entrance. The philosophy of Feng Shui explains this as good fortune and new opportunities walk through the door so you dont want your back to it. If your in a cubical and the positioning of the desk does not allow you to face the doorway then place a mirror on the wall next to your monitor so you can see when someone approaches your cube. The type of desk you need depends on your occupation and what kind of storage you require. If you dont have a lot of files or dont need them within arms reach you maybe able to use a simple secretarys desk. If you do require more storage a executive desk maybe better option for you. There are other storage and filing options such as: credenzas, bookcases, and rolling file cabients. If your lucky enough to have the room for other seating such as a couch, chaise or other chairs arrange them to best utilize the space. For example a couch should be pushed up agianst the wall or window so you have more space in the center of the room. Depending where most of your business will be done should determine placement of chairs. For example if your a therapist and your clients will be on the couch then arranging the chairs in front of of next to the couch would be best but if your meeting clients to review paperwork then two chairs facing your desk would be best. If possible do not arrange your work space to look straight out into a hallway, in front of stairs, elevators, storage rooms, or bathrooms. Having your office centered to a busy location can be very distracting. Other rules to follow are to keep your cords to your office equipment well hidden, keep your files organized and eliminate any unnecessary clutter. Following these simple rules will help make your office more balanced.
Color
If your in a home office or your office allows you to paint the walls choose a color that calms you and sparks your creativity. See Interiors: The power of color for more information on the moods of color. A great color for an office is blue because it is a calming color. If you choose a brighter blue or a green blue like turquoise it may help spark creativity as well. Purple is another calming but creative color and signify’s power in many cultures. Since red and yellow are such intense colors and can cause intense emotions, they are not recommended for an office. If your unable to paint your walls then adding color in other ways such of photo frames, and posters is another alternative. If your in a cubical then finding a cute, fun fabric is a great option. Simply cut the fabric to fit the size of the wall, if your unable to remove the holdings then tuck the corners into the cervices as best you can then staple or pin the edges to the wall. Again choose calm creative colors and a pattern that isn’t too busy.
Decor
Most of us spend the majority of the week in our office so add your own personal touches to make it more comfortable and homey. Bring a few framed photos of your loved ones to place on your bookcase or wall. When your unable to spend the day with the ones you love having photos of them near by helps you still feel connected to them though the day. Possibly hang your diplomas and other achievements on the wall to remind you of your achievements. Another great mood booster is light so add extra lighting in your office with a lamp. If your desk is too small for a table lamp consider a floor lamp. One of the most important things to do is add life to your office with a small plant or fish. Do not choose sharp, pointy plants like a cactus but rather a leafy, full flowing plant. Since your in an office the sunlight for your plant will be limited so choose a plant that requires little or no sunlight such as a pothos.
Fun Accessories
Having fun, playfully office accessories is also a great way to add some excitement to your workday. Some office accessories can also help consolidate your space. For example a tape roll holder that also have a place for your pens and paperclips. Add some color to your office by using colorful file folders, storage bins, and notepads. A DIY option is to wrap your current files with scrap-booking paper or wrapping paper. Just like you would any room in your home find your style and make it your own.
