If you like bold colors, clean lines and sleek open spaces then you might like a Modern interior design. Modern furniture was introduced in the early 1900s but has greatly developed over the years. Keep it simple

Remember to keep the design simple. When doing a modern design it is easy to buy furniture that looks the part but isn’t functional. The number one key to design is to make sure you can utilize the pieces you’ve chosen. If you cant sit on the couch you bought then it doesn’t do much good. If you choose  a over extravagant couch with lots of design elements then that should be the focal point. For modern designs though the larger furniture pieces should be simple and understated. Keep it neutral 

When choosing a couch or other key pieces for your living room keep it neutral. White, black, or tan are the most popular choices. Modern design is about having a uncluttered clean space so choosing a white couch helps give that clean and sleek vibe.  Your main focal points such as the couch or walls should stay neutral, preferably white. White looks clean and crispy which is the basis for  a modern design.  You can add color into your design with the decor accents. Staying within a monochromatic look is visually appealing because it widens the space and creates a hip and chic look to your living room. Find your Material

Accenting with a different type of material will also achieve the modern look. Metal, glass,and wood are a few options. For a modern design you should stick with one or two types of materials, use it sparingly and in the right locations. Usually a modern design uses a high shine finish material or wood. Adding a material such as glass, metal ,wood, etc. helps add texture to the design. Use bold colors for accents

If you would like you can add a little color to your living room design. Pick a color or two that you would want to accent with. A pop of color can completely change the look of a room. Image the first room below without the purple, it would look completely different without the color in it.  Just like material, use it sparingly and in the right places. Adding pops of color helps balance the room but you want to use it in the right places and in the right way. Do not go over board with accents and color because a modern living room design should be minimal and clean. Color can be just slightly added such as the only color in the room is in a painting on the wall like shown in picture 2.
